DOUBLE BROKERING

7 Red Flags of a Double Broker

6 min read · Free guide from Southeast Freight Dispatch

Double brokering is simple theft with paperwork: a broker takes a load, hands it to another broker (or an unvetted carrier), and pockets the spread. You haul for less, get paid late — or never. Here's how to spot it before your wheels turn.

1. The MC on the rate con doesn't match

The #1 tell. The rate confirmation's MC number must match the broker who booked you. Mismatch = someone re-brokered your load. Walk away.

2. No rate con before pickup

"We'll send it after you load." No. A legitimate broker sends the rate confirmation before the truck moves. Every time.

3. Rate way above market, zero questions

A $4.00/mile offer on a $2.50 lane with no vetting questions isn't generosity — it's bait. They need a truck fast because the real broker is about to find out.

4. Brand-new MC, no credit history

MC less than 6 months old + no payment history + premium rate = classic setup. Check any MC free at app.dispaloadiq.com/check — it flags double-brokering warnings with no account needed.

5. They ask your driver to "find another truck"

If a broker ever asks you to re-broker a load, you're holding stolen freight. Refuse, document, report to FMCSA.

6. Weird payment terms

"We'll mail a check" or "we don't work with factoring companies." Legitimate brokers pay through standard channels on standard terms.

7. The facility never heard of them

Call the shipper and confirm the broker is on the load. Thirty seconds on the phone has saved truckers thousands.

The 5-minute rule

Before every first load with a new broker: dispaloadiq check, FMCSA authority + $75k bond verification, days-to-pay lookup (0–25 excellent, 26–35 good, 36–50 slow, 51+ walk away), and rate-con MC match. Five minutes. Every time.
