IFTA Explained for Owner-Operators

5 min read · Free guide from Southeast Freight Dispatch

IFTA — the International Fuel Tax Agreement — is how fuel taxes get split between the states you drive through. Buy fuel in Florida, burn it in Georgia: Georgia still wants its cut. Here's the plain-English version.

Who needs it

If you run a qualified motor vehicle (over 26,000 lbs, or 3+ axles) across state lines, you need IFTA. Your base jurisdiction issues one license and one set of decals — good in all 48 contiguous states and Canada.

The quarterly deadlines

File even for quarters with zero miles — a missing return triggers penalties.

What records to keep

Miles per state per quarter (your ELD tracks this — pull the report), plus every fuel receipt with date, location, gallons, and price. No receipts = the auditor estimates, and their estimate is never in your favor.

What happens if you miss

Late filing = penalty + interest per jurisdiction. Ignore it long enough and your IFTA license gets revoked — then you're buying trip permits state by state, which costs far more than the filing ever did.

The easy button

We file IFTA for our carriers at $65/truck/quarter — you send the mileage and fuel data, we handle the returns. One less deadline to lose sleep over.
