Coercion: When They Pressure You to Break the Law

5 min read · Free guide from Southeast Freight Dispatch

A broker threatening to blacklist you unless you drive past your hours. A shipper demanding you run overweight. That's not "tough business" — that's coercion, and FMCSA made it explicitly illegal.

What counts as coercion

What to do in the moment

  1. Say no, in writing. Text or email: "I cannot legally run this load as requested due to HOS." Paper trail beats memory.
  2. Document everything: names, times, load number, exactly what was demanded.
  3. Do not drive. No load is worth your license, your life, or someone else's.

How to report it

File a coercion complaint with FMCSA's National Consumer Complaint Database — it takes about 15 minutes online. FMCSA can fine coercers up to $16,000+ per violation. Complaints are confidential; your name isn't shared with the company.

Why this matters to us

We will never ask a driver to run illegal. If a broker pressures you, tell us — we handle the broker, document the coercion, and we stop running their freight. Your license is your livelihood. We protect it like ours depends on it — because it does.

Tired of doing all of this yourself?

We vet every broker, negotiate every rate, and handle the paperwork — 8% per load, $0 upfront.
